Insulating and Ventilating a Backyard Building

A planning guide from the Olivandro Co. build crew.

An uninsulated shed in an Arkansas July regularly runs 120 degrees inside. That destroys paint, glue, electronics and any desire to work in there.

Ventilation first

Continuous soffit intake plus a ridge or gable exhaust costs very little and drops peak temperatures dramatically. Do this even in a pure storage building.

Insulation levels

R-13 in 2x4 walls and R-19 or better in the roof assembly is the practical target for a conditioned workshop. Do not insulate without a plan for the vapor and airflow.

Air sealing

Sealing the sill, corners and penetrations gains you more comfort per dollar than adding insulation depth.

Conditioning

A single mini-split heat pump handles most 12x20 to 14x28 workshops in central Arkansas year round.
